Sustainability and Environmental Design

Every time we tread on the earth, we make a mark on it; a footprint that cannot be untrod.

As designers we have power over those footprints, their depth, their permanence, their impact. The future of design isn’t environmentally conscious, the present is, and it is our responsibility to tread lightly.

At studio 31, we believe fundamentally that design should begin and end with nature. The natural world underpins the health of both people and planet, and it is therefore nature which influences each decision and movement we make both as a practice and within our projects.

Our approach is gentle, imaginative and ambitious, local, circular and biodiverse, connected, sustainable and ecologically sensitive. We first assess and then enhance. We consider doing less as powerful as doing more and we believe in a landscape to be both our guide and compass.
