Treehouse Design

An off-the-grid haven

Project Details

This Treehouse Design was commissioned by a client who wanted a structure to act as a year-round summerhouse within an isolated orchard on their country estate; this tree house was truly a pleasure to design. The small pocket of land, populated with native orchids and surrounded on 3 sides by a body of water, lent itself to a cantilevered structure over the water itself.

The canopy of the trees above provided dappled shade and shelter from the English elements and we explored the use of timber from within the orchard itself to provide much of the structure. This along with other locally recycled materials minimised the environmental and visual impact of the structure whilst still maintaining the enchanted atmosphere of this place.

Off-grid doesn’t have to mean lacking comfort so we used recycled double glazing, oil lanterns, insulation and passive ventilation to create a snug, warm space no matter what the weather. For those starry nights or summer parties, we snuck in an outdoor fire pit and the result was a beautiful cosy nest within a mature oak tree for family and friends to enjoy through all seasons.
