Old meets new, SuffolkA place so peaceful, we almost didn’t want to leaveProject DetailsThis garden design in Suffolk consisted of a grade II listed barn conversion which had been lovingly and sympathetically restored to give an interior space with a real wow factor. A double height voided living area with wall to ceiling glass, framed a large garden and really set the bar high for Studio 31 to create an equally impressive outdoor space.Surrounded on all sides by open farmland, the owners of this property wanted a garden that was sympathetic to the surrounding landscape and yet gave them a little more privacy from their immediate neighbours. A sloping site on different levels, there were more than a few challenges to overcome in order to create an understated and simple outdoor space to relax, reflect and be still.Studio 31 overcame the topographical issues by creating a level access from the rear of the property into a small courtyard area. Central steps flowed onto a large open lawn encased with native hedging and a simple tree avenue which made the most of the countryside views beyond. A grass garden gave height and structure to the rear garden as well as a dynamic effect of giving life to the eastern winds that blow across the valley. At the front entrance to the property, we created a large courtyard patio which doubled as an east facing breakfast area to make maximum use of the morning sun. This offered views out onto an island of silver birch trees and wildflowers which helped blend the car parking areas into the countryside and surrounding estate. The result; a place so peaceful, we didn’t want to leave.
