Health Design
Most of us have experienced the health benefits of nature in some way, whether that is the calming effect of a stroll through the forest or a stillness that comes from a coastal walk. Whatever our experience of the physiological and psychological effects of nature, there is one thing most people agree on; nature is good for us. Thankfully modern science is now catching up and beginning to evidence the multitude of health benefits, spending time in nature has on our bodies and minds.
With most of our time spent in and around buildings, why then, aren’t more building schemes nature led? The truth is, they are beginning to be. With science supporting the health benefits of even viewing nature through a window, architects, planners and policy makers are beginning to see, not only the therapeutic but also preventative value of nature to health.
With a multi-disciplinary team including a mental health professional and lecturer, Studio 31 uses research-led health design to create landscapes which are not only beautiful but also good for us. We work on hospices, health care centres, hospitals and schools but our health design research is the foundation of all our work and so underpins our residential design also.
With more and more science available to support the work we do, we are able to have open and transparent conversations with clients about the impact of design choices on their health and support them to make informed decisions to create healthier spaces at home and away.
